Viewing Wildlife

Viewing wildlife at Rockwood is a great pastime, and rewards the patient. Moose are making a nice comeback, look for them at sunrise or dusk on back roads, or even the gunflint trail. I spotted my first moose when Stephanie and I were paddling on Horseshoe lake. I said “grab the camera” and she said “paddle backwards!” . The big bull moose went into the woods, unphotographed. I saw three other moose this summer; in October we saw a lynx and a large wolf, and this month we’ve seen several foxes. Loons are common in the summer, and eagles are known to get their stomachs filled throughout the season. Ducks are comical and often come right up to you on the shore, check out Gunflint Lodge for a huge flock of ducks begging for treats.
